Festival of the Arts is celebrating 50 years in 2019! Held annually on the first weekend in June, it is a free, three-day community event that celebrates every discipline of the arts; dance, music, literature & media, visual arts, and design. Everyone is invited to attend and experience the rich artistic talent our region offers. Being a regional arts event, Festival of the Arts, represents eight counties including Kent, Ottawa, Ionia, Allegan, Muskegon, Montcalm, Barry, and Newaygo. Every performance, exhibition, and children’s creative activity remains free for all.

This is West Michigan's Premier Anime Convention. It will be a weekend full of fun! Some activities include: Watching anime, reading manga, arcade games, tournaments, battlepods, board games, card games, shop with a variety of vendors, wear your cosplay, and jam to music all day long!Guests include Voice Actors Steve Blum, Cherami Leigh, Jamie Marchi, and Luci Christian.

Movies on Monroe: Beetlejuice & Bohemian Rhapsody

Movies on Monroe, the premier outdoor film series in Grand Rapids, returns this summer with big screen entertainment by the banks of the Grand River! This event will feature Beetlejuice (PG) and Bohemian Rhapsody (PG-13) played in English with English subtitles. Movies will play on 400-square foot LED video wall. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring their own chairs, beer, wine, and snacks. Rental lawn chairs will be available for $2 per chair. Food trucks will be on-site and various snacks will be available for purchase at the event. Pets are welcome! This is a smoke-free event series. Costumes are encouraged.

Pete Lee was a semi-finalist on NBC's "Last Comic Standing”. He has his own Comedy Central Half Hour Special, which has earned him a "cult" following at comedy clubs and colleges across the country. Pete was the first comedian to get a standing ovation on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.

Free Fishing, Off-Roading, and State Park Entry

It's Michigan's "Three Free" Weekend, where you can fish, ride off-road trails, and visit state parks, all free of charge. The "Three Free" Weekend includes: Free fishing: Twice a year (once in the summer, once in the winter), residents and nonresidents can enjoy Free Fishing Weekends and fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations do apply. Free state park entry: To encourage people to pursue free fishing and other outdoor fun within state parks, the DNR waives the regular Recreation Passport entry fee that grants vehicle access to Michigan’s 103 state parks. Riding ORV trails for free: During two Free ORV Weekends each year (the second one is set for Aug. 17-18), Michigan residents and nonresidents legally can ride DNR-designated routes and trails without purchasing an ORV license or trail permit.

It’s the Brian Diemer 5k race on Saturday, celebrating 30 years! There will also be a mobility 5k, 1000 meter Steeplechase and Jr. Jog. The course is flat and very fast. There will be 6 bands out on the course. There is $9000 in prize money, a pasta dinner the night before, post race gathering and so much more!

Come meet your favorite princesses at John Ball Zoo! All princesses, princes, and knights are welcome. Come dressed as your favorite characters and meet Cinderella, Arabian Princess, Ice Queen, Snow Princess, Island Princess, Scottish Princess, Frog Princess, and Beauty princess. Princess hair and makeup services as well as tiaras, wands, fans, and bracelets will be available for purchase. (Characters rotate throughout the day.)
