Nana’s Run is the creation of the event chairpersons, Cassandra DeVos Thorndill and Sydney DeVos. The race is a tribute to their beloved maternal grandmother Char VanderLaan, affectionately called Nana, who passed away on March 7, 2014 after battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Since Nana VanderLaan was diagnosed with ALS in October 2013, the DeVos granddaughters have made a commitment to raise awareness about the disease and to raise funds that will support patient and physician education, ALS patients and their families, and ongoing research within Michigan.

Proceeds promote efforts to protect the endangered Karner blue butterfly. The Karner blue butterfly is a small blue butterfly which was once found in significant numbers in Michigan.

The Great Lakes Kite Festival is the largest of its kind in the Midwest featuring over 25 flyers from throughout the U.S. and Canada. World-famous stunt kite fliers perform to music on the center flying field while kites larger than a school bus hover just to the south. You can even bring your own kite to fly on the open flying field at the north end of the event, or test fly the year’s newest kites on one of the manufacturer’s fields.
