A brand new multi-use amphitheater is being planned for an area along the riverfront right in downtown Grand Rapids.

The City of Grand Rapids is selling property to be developed along the riverfront on Market Ave. SW.  The development along the lakeshore will include a brand new 14,000 seat amphitheater and is part of the River for All plan that the city revealed in 2018.  The new facility is planned for 201 Market Ave. SW once the City of Grand Rapids sells the 11.6 acres of the 17.5 acre 201 Market property.

In a quote from the City of Grand Rapids website, City Manager Mark Washington said “This type of innovative public-private partnership between private developers, the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority and the City ensures we’re responsibly reinvesting and growing in ways that will provide value to our residents while continuing to improve everyone’s quality of life.”

Development of the property won't begin for at least a year because the sale of the property isn't expected to be finalized until December of 2021.  The sale of the 201 Market property will generate an estimated $24.5 million in revenue.

The amphitheater and development of the property is just in the proposal phase, so the plans could change as time goes on.  Before any new development happens, the City is moving the "eastside trunk sewer" which is underneath the 201 Market Ave. SW property.  Construction on the sewer relocation will begin Spring of 2021 and be completed in the Spring of 2022.

You can read more about the proposal on the City of Grand Rapids' website.
