93-Pound Petoskey Stone to be on Permanent Display in Detroit
An unusually large Petoskey stone that was found in Lake Michigan two years ago will now be on display in Detroit for people to admire.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Michigan DNR officials confirmed the news and the 93-pound stone will be placed at the Outdoor Adventure Center, in Downtown Detroit.
...it probably will be displayed under an indoor waterfall in November."
The rock was originally found in Leelanau Twp. by a Manistee man in 2015. After digging it out and lugging it to his car, the man took the rock home and of course shared it on social media where it went viral. He didn't have it for very long, though, because conservation officers seized it. In Michigan, it's illegal to remove rocks or fossils that weigh more than 25 pounds out of the Great Lakes.
So why Detroit when the Petoskey stone was found in the U.P? UpNorthLive spoke to State Parks Chief Ron Olson who said it all came down to what area gets the most amount of people.
The amount of visitation we have at the Outdoor Adventure Center is much more, we get people from all over, not just people in Detroit."
He also said that this will show people what a Petoskey stone is who may not know anything about it.
