It may still be cold and snowy outside, but many people are already starting to think about sunnier, warmer weather -- and summer!

Perhaps you, or someone you know, is looking for a job. Imagine just sitting around a pool, in the sun, and getting paid for it! You could become a lifeguard this summer at one of the City of Grand Rapids' three public pools. The job is open to anyone 15 years or older.

How to I apply for a lifeguard job with the City of Grand Rapids?

There are a few steps you have to complete beforehand, including getting certified by the Red Cross as a lifeguard. This year the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is making that process a little easer for those who would like to go through training. The American Red Cross lifeguard certification courses are scheduled for February, March and April this year. Those who agree to work at one of the city’s pools this upcoming season are eligible to enroll for free. (The fee is normally $250.) After passing the course, you will receive a American Red Cross lifeguarding certification that is good for two years.

Once you get your certification, you could be hired to work at one of the following public pools:

  • Briggs Park at 324 Knapp Street NE
  • Martin Luther King Park at 1200 Franklin Street SE
  • Richmond Park at 963 Richmond Street NW

The certification classes will take place at the Salvation Army's Kroc Center located at 2500 South Division in Grand Rapids. Courses are scheduled for February 25th-27th, March 18th-20th, and April 22nd-24th. Click  here to get registered. Registration is required.

What does the lifeguard job pay?

In the past, City of Grand Rapids lifeguards earned $11.25 per hour. This year, the city is raising its starting wage up to $14 per hour.

Hmmm, maybe I'll be applying for a summer job!
