Volunteers who are part of the Adopt-A-Highway program will be out cleaning up our highways this week. Please be careful if you are driving through an area where they are working.

These volunteers do a fantastic job and keeping our highways looking nice. The first clean up was earlier in the spring -- to pick up all the trash that had collected over the winter months.

Adopt-A-Highway Workers Summer Clean Up is This Week

The summer pickup schedule runs from Saturday, July 16th through Sunday, July 24th. The groups will be wearing high-visibility yellow-green safety vests that are required by federal regulations. The Michigan Department of Transportation provides free vests and trash bags and then arranges for the trash to be hauled away.

How Much Trash is Collected by Adopt A Highway Workers Every Year?

In a typical year, the volunteers that you see out cleaning up our highways collect between 30-35 tons of trash -- that's right -- 60,000-70,000 pounds of trash and debris that would otherwise just sit alongside our highways.

How Can I Become an Adopt-A-Highway Volunteer?

There are sections of highway still available for adoption. Groups are asked to make a two year commitment when signing up to Adopt-A-Highway. A sign with the group's name will be posted along the stretch of road the group is responsible for. There must be a minimum of three people in the group. There is no fee for participation. Crew members must be at least 12 years old. For more information, visit the Adopt-A-Highway website.

Thanks to all the Adopt-A-Highway volunteers for keeping our roadways looking clean and nice.
