There are few things more terrifying than the idea of a nuclear war. War fought at that level could potentially bring about an extermination level event.

But one Michigan company was leading the way to try to help families survive by selling fallout shelters.

Amway, based in the Grand Rapids suburb of Ada marketed 'Survival Shelters' in magazines with this ominous pitch:

When nuclear war comes, you and your family will live to enjoy America's ultimate victory if you prepare now...but without a survival shelter you will most certainly perish...

In other words, buy from us or die.

The shelters were of "battleship construction" and designed to "exceed all US Government specifications and requirements."

The shelters were available for $0 down with a monthly payment as low at $33.

The advertisement showed a (pun unintended) nuclear family with father at a table enjoying a coffee with mother taking care of the duties of her sphere. A baby with a rattle rolls on the floor while two older children sit on bunk beds.

There is, oddly, a television set with rabbit ears in the shelter thought it seems odd a tv signal could penetrate the ground and shelter and there may not be anyone above ground left to broadcast.

The landscape above the shelter shows a fiery wasteland with downed power lines and the base of a mushroom cloud.

WOOD-TV once toured an Amway shelter under a home in Edmore:
