ArtPrize 2014: What's Going On October 11

On Friday night in ceremonies at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre with a watch party at Rosa Park Circle, ArtPrize 2014 handed out its awards.

The big winner was Indianapolis artist Anila Quayyum Agha's Grand Rapids Art Museum installation titled "Intersections."

The 6½-foot cube, which is illuminated from the inside out with its shadows projected, claimed the $200,000 public vote grand prize.

It also helped Quayyum Agha, an associate professor at Herron School of Art & Design at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, share the $200,000 juried selection grand prize with the two-dimensional "The Hair Craft Project" by Sonya Clark, who chairs Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts craft and material studies program in Richmond, Va. Clark's piece is on exhibit at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University's Federal Building.

According to ArtPrize, there were 41,109 registered voters casting 398,714 votes over 16 days -- from Sept. 24 through Thursday night.

ArtPrize 2014's 1,825 artists are represented by 1,536 entries at 174 venues in downtown Grand Rapids and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Today (Saturday, Oct. 11) is the 18th day of ArtPrize, which runs through Sunday.

It's a dance party from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. celebrating the closing of ArtPrize, with music and energy-filled illuminations in front of Van Andel Arena, 130 W. Fulton St., at the installation titled "Love ArtPrize."

With its prime location, the 10-foot high, 18-foot wide three-dimensional installation has been a favorite for photos. The metal, glass and LED-lit structure is by Kiaralinda, of Safety Harbor, Fla., has previously been the site of two kissing contests during ArtPrize.

Today's Thing To Do

Take the "Ultimate Selfie" from noon to 6 p.m. at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain Street NE.

The 10-foot high, 10-foot wide by 8-foot deep installation is by Kimberly Ohms, an interior designer from Chicago, and Ritsu Katsumata, a communications designer from Grand Rapids.

Ohms will be on hand to discuss the multi-media presentation using a multi-channel security camera system with nine cameras.
