Autocorrect Leads To Police Action
I used to think autocorrect was man's greatest invention. Until I sent out a few embarrassing texts. But none as embarrassing as a Wisconsin woman sent out.
Eight police officers in Wisconsin swarmed a woman's apartment in Wisconsin after she texted her father that she was being stabbed. It turned out it was an autocorrect mistake . . . she was being SWABBED for coronavirus.
Fortunately, no one got hurt during any of this . . . although we don't have any word on whether the woman tested positive for the virus.
“He indicated that his daughter was being stabbed, possibly by a live-in boyfriend. He provided an address to check on," Menasha police officer Nick Oleszak told the Green Bay Press Gazette. "Meanwhile, we tried to call her dad back and tried to reach his daughter, but were unable to reach her."
I'm not sure who comes up with some of the words I've seen my texts autocorrected to, but I can't help but think that some of them are kind of a "revenge of the nerds" type of a thing, where maybe the guys and girls writing the software are out to mess with us a little.
In the meantime Oleszak says he thinks a little check of your text before it goes out is good practice. “Misunderstandings like this are very rare. We don’t want to dissuade people from sending texts for help.”
Amen, brother.
