It's a picture that could melt even the coldest of hearts. German Photographer Tobias Baumgaertner was selected as the winner for Oceanographic magazine's Ocean Photograph Awards. Tobias Baumgaertner took the award-winning pic of the mourning birds in Melbourne, Australia.

The two widowed penguins who appear to be comforting each other were selected as a winner. St. Kilda Pier has a colony of about 1400 Fairy penguins which are the smallest penguin species. Baumgaertner said on his Instagram account,

"A volunteer approached me and told me that the white one was an elderly lady who had lost her partner and apparently so did the younger male to the left."

The penguins meet regularly and comfort one another. Most penguins mate for life and most are monogamous. This means that male and female pairs will mate exclusively with each other for the duration of mating season and return to one an another year after year. Penguins will continue to mate with each other for most of their lives. Baumgaertner spent 3 nights trying to capture the image. He said,

"Between not being able or allowed to use any lights and the tiny penguins continuously moving, rubbing their flippers on each other's backs and cleaning one another, it was really hard to get a shot. But I got lucky during one beautiful moment."

On his Instagram account, the photographer has received over 26,000 likes for the penguin pic. To see his entire portfolio visit his professional site here. And like the song says, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with."
