Bill Cosby Trial, Day 9 — Jury Says They’re Deadlocked, Judge Orders Them to Try Again

After nearly 30 hours of deliberations, the jury on the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial told Judge Steven O'Neill that they are deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict. Judge O'Neill told jurors to return to their task for another attempt. Cosby's defense team requested a mistrial, but the judge refused.

“We cannot reach unanimous consensus on any of the counts,” jurors wrote in a note to Judge O'Neill, who responded with a renewed charge for them to reach a consensus.

"The jury foreman has informed me that you are deadlocked," Judge O'Neill said. "If you are still deadlocked you should report that to me. If you've reached a unanimous decision on some of the charges, please report that back to me. ... Each of you has a duty to consult with one another and to deliberate with a view to reaching an agreement."

This is the fourth day overall that jurors, five women and seven men, have been behind closed doors trying to come to a decision, which may be a record-long time period in this jurisdiction.

If the jury cannot reach a consensus, Judge O'Neill will be forced to declare a mistrial, and Cosby will go free. But for now, jurors must reconvene and try to come to a unanimous decision. If convicted, Cosby could face up to 10 years in prison for each of three counts of aggravated indecent assault.
