This is totally hard to imagine and rather mind blowing. They are building a new structure right on the border of Greektown and the Central Business District of Detroit, and they are building it from the top down. Say What?

Fox 17 reported the amazing story of the Exchange, a16-floor under-construction tower in Detroit.

Pretty hard to imagine, isn't it. It is for everybody because this is the first of its kind across North America. The building is 207 feet tall, and is being built from the top down as a prototype for the LIFTbuild technology. A system that turns a construction site into a manufacturing plant.

The $64 million tower is supported by two concrete structures called the spine which house the elevators and staircases and also act as a pulley to hoist floors that each weigh a million pounds.

Take a look at this. Here is how it all happens.

That is amazing. So, how does it work? The construction company says,

"It’s a fully cantilever design and there are no columns in the way of the exterior glazing, so if we go up to the floors, you will see a wide-open floor space, that’s great for the residents but also assembled in a way that’s very efficient for the workers. Each floor is built on the ground using over 150,000 pounds of steel and 110 cubic yards of concrete. Once assembled, it's raised at an average speed of 25 feet per hour."

The lifting process for the 13th floor started at 4 a.m. and by 11 a.m., the team was ready to start the 4-hour-long locking process to the floor above. And once complete, an ideal work environment is secured and the workers are in excellent working conditions as they attach everything, plumbing, electric, etc.

Here is another thing, it's a big cost saver in construction cost, 10 to 20%, and only 50 construction workers are needed on site. Considering how hard it is to find workers, that is huge.

So, what will the building be? Primarily a residential tower with a few commercial spots on the first floor. It’s set to be completed by late spring of 2023.
