City of Grand Rapids to Offer Kayaking Activities
Everyone likes to take advantage of the nicer summer weather. Here is a chance for you to enjoy not only the weather, but also the water in Grand Rapids.
Whether you are an experienced kayaker, or just thinking about giving it a try, the City of Grand Rapids is providing some kayaking experiences you might want to check out.
Guided Kayaking Adventures
First, they are offering guided kayaking adventuress all summer long. These trips include basic instruction, a kayak and paddle, and a personal flotation device. There will also be trained staff members on each trip. This is a 2-hour paddle down the Grand River from Riverside Park down to Canal Park. These trips will be offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer. Here is the schedule:
- Tuesdays, May 24th through September 13th, 6-8 pm
- Saturdays, May 21st through September 17th, Noon-2 pm
- Saturdays, May 28th, June 25th, July 30th, and August 27th, 11 am-1 pm
The cost for the trips is $30 for residents of the City of Grand Rapids and $40 for non-residents. You must be 18 years old or older, but no kayaking experience is necessary. You do need to register in advance. You can do that here.
Family Kayaking Demonstrations
The City of Grand Rapids will also be offering free kayaking demos for families. These will be held from 5-8 pm on the Friday evenings of May 20th, June 24th, July 29th, and August 26th at the Riverside Park lagoon. Participants just have to be at least 10 years old. Here is a chance to try out a kayak and enjoy a 20 minute ride around the lagoon. As with the guided kayaking adventures, a kayak and paddle will be provided, along with a personal floatation device. These demonstrations are free and no advance registration is required. There will also be yard games and campfire s'mores! The Food Truck Fridays event will also be taking place at Riverside Park for additional food and snack options.
