Is It Possible to Drive Across Michigan on One Tank of Gas?
Crisscrossing the state of Michigan via its highways is an experience enjoyed by native Michiganders and tourists alike. Is Michigan the right size to experience on a single tank of gas?
If you were attempting both peninsulas, that answer would almost certainly be no. Travelling from, say Monroe in the southeast corner of the state to Ironwood at the far western tip of the Upper Peninsula is a 623 mile trek that would take you an estimated 9 hours.

How about a single peninsula? Can it be done on one tank of gas? The question came up on Reddit when users on that platform were discussing the sometimes surprising lack of gas stations across the rural Upper Peninsula, particularly when looking for fuel late at night.
This comment catches the eye:
I mean, I can get from Ironwood to St Ignace on one tank, so just fill up before you leave and you’ll be good.
So can the entirely of the UP be crossed on a single tank? Depending on your vehicle's gas mileage, likely yes. The trip described above of Ironwood to St. Ignace is 303 miles via M-28 and Marquette. It's a nearly identical 305 miles should you use US 2 between those two cities.
A trip the long way across Michigan's lower Peninsula is just over 330 miles from the Ohio state line to the Mackinac Bridge at Mackinaw City. And a driver may be pushing the limits of their gas tank attempting to do all of I-75 in Michigan which is a 395 mile trip.
