Michigan Fans Wonder: Why Can’t the Detroit Lions Pay Top Coaches More to Keep Them?
Editor's Note: This article was originally pushed a few hours prior to several news outlets reporting Ben Johnson would take the vacant head coaching position with the Chicago Bears.
There are few NFL head coaching prospects in greater demand at the close of the 2024 season than Detroit Lions coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson.
Both have been on multiple job interviews and will likely land one of the coveted open head coaching positions around the league.

Many Detroit Lions fans wonder, why can't these coaches be paid more money and would that make them stay in Michigan? The question came up recently on a Reddit forum dedicated to new football fans asking why the Lions don't just up compensation for their Offensive and Defensive coordinators:
I know there’s a big jump in compensation between coordinator and head coach, but if the lions decided to pay say $10 million a year to Glenn and Johnson, would they stay with the Lions or is a head coach gig that much more desirable?

The general consensus is that is comes down the scarcity of NFL head coaching positions. There are only 32 of these jobs and only a handful open up each year.
If you're a name that is being tossed around and there's interest in you, conventional wisdom is that you almost have to take your shot.
Many former head coaches revert back to coordinator or assistant coach positions, but big bites at the apple are sometimes only a once-in-a-career opportunity.
This fan sums it up well:
Most coordinators are in the game to become head coaches and run their team. You could definitely get some to stay around a little longer for more, but most are still going to want to leave when they have their window.
So you have the situation the Detroit Lions currently find themselves in, both their offensive and defensive coordinators and the top 'flavors-of-the-day.' And the chance is now for both Johnson and Glenn. So expect the Lions to do some rebuilding on the coaching level.
