The Honolulu Boom Drumline Might Be the Detroit Lions Best Home Game Tradition
The Detroit Lions have many fantastic traditions like playing at home each Thanksgiving Day. They also have some, in this author's opinion, some lame ones like holding up signs with the number 3 on third downs.
But one tradition that may stand above the rest is the Honolulu Boom Drum Line.

The percussion ensemble plays not just on game days but also makes appearances through the community as goodwill ambassadors for the team. The appearances last up to an hour and even can include black tie functions.
What many fans may not realize is the drumline is not a volunteer fan organization. Rather, Honolulu Boom members are full fledged employees of the Detroit Lions organization. Before a drummer can make the squad, they must pass a rigorous audition process.

The drumline dates back to 2007. According to a 2023 profile in the Detroit Free Press, the Honolulu Boom only took on a prominent role in the last few seasons as their shows have become more elaborate with lights and effects.
Like a college marching band, having a drumline can lead to special moments like a drumline battle. When the Vikings came to Ford Field to play the Lions. Along with the team from Minnesota came their own drumline, the Skol Line. A 6 minute drumline battle ensued at halftime. Check out the video here.
