The city says there are reasons why some days the water smells and tastes musty or earthy from time to time. Here is the Facebook post:

Grand Rapids water comes from Lake Michigan. It is sent through a treatment plant near the lakeshore. The water follows the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The city noted on their Facebook page,

"In the summer, the lake often experiences algae blooms. This can affect the flavor of the water. To respond to this change, we adjust our treatment process by adding activated carbon. The carbon helps to reduce unwanted tastes and odors. The process of adding carbon itself can change the taste and odor of the water. People's sense of taste and smell differ, so some people may notice changes while others may not."

The topic became a discussion on the Grand Rapids Reddit page.

BigTrech said,

"Thought it was something with my pipes.... Taste like mold"

__Smokesletsgo__ commented,

"Ugh yes I thought it was just me. It's been tasting/smelling fishy for at least a few days."

My Michigan Account gave this advice,

"I've found that bleeding off some water before filling a cup I intend to drink makes a big difference in taste. It seems to decrease how concentrated the flavor is if you haven't run the sink in a little while."

There are between 40 to 50 sampling station across the city's distribution area checking the water for chlorine residuals, fluoride components, TTA chemicals and disinfectant byproducts. If you feel you have a problem, you can call 616-456-3000.
