Following a domestic violence incident in mid-January, Patrisha McLean, wife of "American Pie" singer Don McLean, has filed for divorce.

According to the AP, Patrisha McLean filed divorce papers in Maine on Thursday (March 10), citing "adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences." The McLeans have been married for 30 years.

Don McLean has been prohibited from having contact with his wife since the domestic violence incident, and Patrisha McLean's attorney, Gene Libby, says in a statement that in that time, his client has gained "strength and insight away from his influence and control." The singer's lawyer, Michael Asen, says that his client "cares very deeply about his wife and family," adding that "this wasn't what he wanted."

On Jan. 18, police were called to the McLeans' Camden, Maine, home at around 2AM. Don McLean was charged with a domestic violence misdemeanor and spent a few hours in Knox County Jail before posting $10,000 bail and being released around 11:30AM. He was later charged with additional counts of criminal threatening, terrorizing, criminal restraint, obstruction and criminal mischief, and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

On Jan. 21, the artist released a statement explaining, in part, that “[w]hat is occurring is the very painful breakdown of an almost 30 year relationship … There are no winners or losers, but I am not a villain …”

According to a second statement, posted to Don McLean's official website a few days later, “[n]either party [was] seeking a divorce,” and the couple was looking to “move forward and rebuild their lives.” It also included a statement from Patrisha McLean, in which she admits that she was unaware that her statement about the alleged assault, which she was using to seek an order of protection, would be made public. She also asked fans “to ignore the sensationalist, scabrous headlines.”

After releasing his debut album, Tapestry, in 1970, Don McLean scored the biggest hit of his career with “American Pie” one year later. In 1980, he earned a Top 10 hit on the country charts with “Crying,” originally recorded by Roy Orbison, from his Chain Lightning album; he also covered Hank Williams‘ “Your Cheatin’ Heart” on Chain Lightning. McLean and his wife have been married since 1987. The couple has two children and live on a 200-acre estate dubbed Lakeview.

McLean’s next scheduled court hearing will take place in early April.
