Driver’s Ed Offered Through GR’s Boys & Girls Club
When I learned to drive, classes were offered through my high school. When my daughter learned to drive, classes had to be taken through an expensive third party. Driver's Education is now being offered through the Grand Rapids Boys and Girls Club.
From start to finish some driving classes can cost upwards of $1000.00 The high cost for driver's ed can stop some teens from joining the work force. It's a problem GRPD Officer Learned noticed at the Steil location of the Boys and Girls Club, when a young employee had a hard time getting to work on time because of the bus schedule.
GRPD Officer Learned began talking with Officers Erickson and Sanders stationed at the Boys and Girls Clubs. The three got to work to try to find a way to get more of their kids into driver's training. This was the beginning of the Century Driving School. Officer Learned told Fox 17 that students will not only learn to drive but they'll also learn about police protocol for when they're eventually on the road or find themselves stopped by police.
The department says that in the future, they plan on having more than 6 students at a time per class. Classes begin April 12, 2021.
