Every year the website 24/7 Wall St. rates the best public school districts in each state and this year East Grand Rapids Public Schools topped the list.  This is somewhat surprising, because usually a school district from the Detroit area will be considered the best in the state.

Three of the leading factors that gave East Grand Rapids Publics Schools the top spot were:

Per student spending: $10,090 (total enrollment: 2,950)
High school graduation rate: 96.6%
Adults with a bachelor’s degree: 78.9%

The East Grand Rapids School District is a bit of an outlier compared to top school districts from other states.  Most of the other top districts had household median incomes that were much higher than the national average of $55,322, but Kent County, which is the county that encompasses the East Grand Rapids school district, was only $54,673.

The website evaluates the districts based on the following categories:

  • Child poverty
  • Spending per student
  • Graduation rate
  • Teachers per student
  • Percentage of adults with a bachelor's degree
  • Preschool enrollment
  • Advanced Placement enrollment

24/7 Wall St. also ranked every state's school systems and Michigan was 33rd in the country for best schools.
