Only a Complete Scrooge Would Balk at the Grand Rapids Gold’s Elf Uniform
It's not uncommon to hear about viral media stunts happening with minor league baseball teams. The minors bank on family fun, sometimes outrageous uniforms and stunts that get the local fans talking. Consider the Savannah Bananas, they've created an entire enterprise around becoming the Clown Princes of Baseball - a crown worn solidly in basketball by the Harlem Globetrotters.
So is there fun to be found in the minor leagues of basketball? Look no further than Grand Rapids where the G-League Gold have tongue-wagging promotions.

For the Christmas season 2024 the team, an affiliate of recent NBA champion Denver Nuggets, created an Elf Night based on the popular Will Farrell holiday movie.
The game was held on Friday December 13 with the Gold squeaking out a 105-102 win over the Indiana Mad Ants.
The uniforms did exactly what the any team hopes for, they drew plenty of attention from across the sports world and beyond. Not all of it, however, was positive.
The Facebook page Sports Spectators headlined a photo of the game,
I can't believe the Nuggets G-League team made grown men dress like elves for a basketball game
with a facepalm emoji. While the venerable Sports Illustrated ran with the headline "G League's Grand Rapids Debuted 'Elf' Movie-Themed Jerseys, and NBA Fans Had Jokes."
The team should be heartened by the swift and strong pushback from fans who loved the gimmick.
What you mean? Those fits are fire
I mean, this is the equivalent to Minor League Baseball doing event nights, and honestly, we need more of it. It helps get more people involved and wanting to be out there.
I was there lol it was Elf night and the kids loved it and at the end of the day it was for the kids and they passed out elf hats as well for the fans

It's not the first time the Grand Rapids G-League team has used a Will Farrell movie for uniform inspiration. Back in 2019 the then Grand Rapids Drive debuted uniforms inspired by the Flint Tropics, the fictional team in the Farrell movie Semi-Pro.
The Elf jerseys were auctioned off after the game for charity.
