There are many places in Michigan where you could get away from it all. But there's isolation and then there's extreme isolation - as in, get lost and really not found. Some of the most extremely isolated places in America are likely in Northern Michigan.

The question came up recently on the Geography subreddit on Reddit asking about the most isolated parts of the continental US. Michigan was an overwhelming response from many.

Isolation can mean different things to different people. Is it the natural world without any modern society encroachment. Or, perhaps, its a great distance to other centers of human settlement.

A vote here for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Almost hit a moose early one morning driving in the fog. A few days later, visited Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary, the quietest place I have ever been in my life

The Estivant Pines are found south of Copper Harbor which is the location in America furthest from an Interstate highway.

Ottawa National Forest area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is very remote. Great place to hide from society.

Ottawa National Forest covers much of the western Upper Peninsula with just shy of 1 million acres of protected land. The national forest abuts state protected land, the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness - a area considered to have the deepest, most impenetrable forests in the Great Lakes region.

Michigans U.P. is densely forested and sparsely populated, if you go off the road in a snow storm in most places there you'll never be found.

Stories like that are reminiscent of places like the Gogomain "swamp of no return" in the Eastern Upper Peninsula where legend tell of people who go missing in the muck and are never seen or heard from again.
