UPDATE: After fan outcry, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been revived for a sixth season by NBC.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is coming to an end.

The cult-followed cop comedy series, which rose to prominence for Andy Samberg's portrayal as the affable Detective Jake Peralta, an eccentric yet faithful officer of the law, will go off the air after failing to secure a sixth season renewal at Fox, Entertainment Weekly reported Thursday (May 10).

Supposedly, the show's dip in average viewership for seasons four (2.9 million) and five (2.7 million) may have inspired Fox's overall decision to drop Nine-Nine.

As expected, Nine-Nine lovers came in swarms to express their discontent about the news, more so grieving the loss of a show that gave a voice to relative and diverse narratives.

"To be honest the cancellation of #Brooklyn99 feels like there is no ~value~ in telling diverse & real stories & inclusive stories bc if a show like b99 that has been critically acclaimed from the beginning & has had the impact it has had can’t make it? There is no hope," wrote one disgruntled follower.

Another echoed similar sentiments, but with hopes that the series will be revived by another, "better network": "#Brooklyn99 was a great show. It had LGBT badasses, POC in charge, and all of the characters were funny without being offensive or crude. Fox lost out on it and I really hope it gets picked up by a better network."

Since its small screen debut in September 2013, the Dan Goor- and Michael Schur-executive produced series gained critical plaudits for its outrageous spin on humor and diverse cast, drawing a fanship akin to fellow laugh-out-loud sitcoms, Parks and Recreation and The Office.

In a tweet, Goor, too, expressed his gratitude for the immense support received by fans of the series.

"Wow. Thank you all for this incredible outpouring of support," he started. "#brooklyn99 fans are the best fans in the world. It means the world to me and everyone else who works on the show."

During its five-season run, the show, which stars players like Stephanie Beatriz, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero and Terry Crews, earned two Golden Globe Awards and Critics' Choice Television Awards, respectively.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's series finale airs May 20 and will concentrate on Jake and Amy's (Fumero) wedding.
