So what exactly has happened to fall in Michigan? Perhaps you have the feeling the state went from summer to winter without much of an autumn buffer. And you may be correct. According to the National Weather Service freezing temperatures has arrived as of this morning (October 2) to portions of the west central Lower Peninsula and near freezing temps were observed across the Lower Peninsula.

According to a graphic from the National Weather Service and shared on the Michigan Weather Authority Facebook group, a 32 degree low temperature was observed around Newaygo and White Cloud. That same low was seen west of Clare.
Near freezing temperatures were seen in Kalamazoo (35 degrees) and 36 near Ithaca and Alma.

The National Weather Service has predicted that the winter of 2024-2025 may be snowier than average in some areas of Michigan - particularly the western Upper Peninsula and north-central Lower Peninsula due to a weak La Nina effect - a weather pattern in the tropical zones of the Pacific Ocean that impact winter in North America.
For now, it's past time to dig the jackets and blankets out of storage if you've not yet done so.
