If you asked almost any Michigander, they would be able to immediately identify the flag of the state of Michigan. But what about the governor's flag? Have you ever seen one? It's likely most Michigan citizens haven't and didn't know one existed.

There are just 16 of the 50 states that have a separate flag for the state's governor and Michigan is one of them.

So what exactly is the Governor of Michigan Flag? It's actually not that much different than the standard state flag. It's the same seal - the elk and moose surrounding the fur trader on the shores of a Great Lake under the word Tuebor - but on a white background for the Governor's flag rather than the standard blue background on the state flag.

Interestingly, when you check out other state's governor's flags there are often some significant differences from the state flag.

The Governor's flag was created in 1911 as part of a bill that set the state's design for its flag and coat-of-arms. Section 2.24 of the bill deals with the governor's flag and states simply:

The governor's flag shall be white charged with the arms of the state.

And that's that.

Modern Use of the Michigan Governor's Flag

So is the state's Governor Flag ever on display? The answer is yes, but it's quite likely very few citizens of the state may see it in person. Check out this view of the Governor's Office as shared by the Michigan State Capitol's official X account.

In the corner of the office to the left of the fireplace is both the flag of the United States and, no, not the blue Michigan flag but the white governor's flag.

And that may just be the only display of the exceedingly rare Michigan governor's flag. Unless, you would like to display one - they are for sale on Amazon.

These Michigan license plate prototypes never made it to the back of any vehicles as an official design. However they were recently discovered as part of a Secretary of State worker's estate and drawn immediate interest from collectors.
