Don’t Forget – These Are Grand Rapids’ Fireworks Laws

'Tis the season for me to get irritated by the people in my neighborhood who have been shooting off fireworks for the past two weeks.

The upside is that soon we will be within the window of days when it is actually LEGAL to shoot off fireworks within the city limits. Not sure what your rights are when it comes to fireworks? Well, we found the info for you.

Here’s when you legally can shoot off fireworks within the city of Grand Rapids:

• 11 a.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 1
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Memorial Day
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. June 29 to July 4
• 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Labor Day.

In 2012 the state of Michigan lifted its ban on “consumer fireworks,” the loud ones like firecrackers and ones that fly up into the air like bottle rockets.

So basically, if you live within the city of Grand Rapids, it’s not legal to use loud, more powerful fireworks outside of the days and times listed above.

The fine for breaking the laws associated with fireworks and getting caught is $1,000 and it's considered a civil infraction.

It's also important to remember that fireworks are only permitted to be ignited from personal property. This means that if you get caught lighting them off on public property, you could be in big trouble. Additional bad news, state law prohibits people who are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs from shooting off fireworks.
