The Dangerous Grand Rapids Freeway Interchange Google Maps Got Wrong
Using Google Maps and other GPS-based navigation systems is how many (the majority?) of drivers navigate the world, particularly when driving in unfamiliar places.
There is one spot in Michigan where drivers say these algorithm-based mapping and navigating software had been directing motorists with a risky traffic maneuver that is expressly prohibited by highway signage.

The Problematic Grand Rapids Interchange
That spot is in downtown Grand Rapids where US 131 meets I-196. The complex interchange, shown below, has several left off-ramps and on-ramps.
The traffic merging in from the left is prohibited from exiting at the immediate next exit. So, coming from southbound US 131 onto eastbound I-196 heading into downtown, you cannot cross 3 lanes in the span of a few hundred feet and exit at Ottawa Ave.

Similarly, traffic coming from westbound I-196 onto southbound US 131 can not cross three lanes to exit at Pearl Street.
Despite the double white lines and the signs prohibiting it, the quick lane crossing is commonplace.
Those using Google Maps to navigate the city reported that the mapping system did direct drivers to make that unauthorized move. A Reddit user shared that they have submitted an edit to the system so that direction is no longer given to drivers.
Drivers' Frustration and Future Outlook
Drivers who get frustrated and endangered ("daughter and I almost got t-boned by someone coming full speed off that exit across the lane like perpendicular to 196.") by the maneuver shouldn't, however, expect any immediate changes.

Unless the Michigan Department of Transportation erects a barrier more concrete than a double white line, drivers will likely continue to make the risky triple lane cross.
