Following surgery this morning, K9 Eli is recovering. During the below incident, K9 Eli was stabbed a total of eight times, causing a significant blood loss that required a blood transfusion. The two major stab wounds punctured his lung; there were additional wounds to his shoulder.

It was a long night for a neighborhood on the northwest side of Grand Rapids on Sunday, November 14th.

Police officers had been trying to locate a suspect who was wanted for felonious assault. Once officers found the suspect, he became uncooperative and barricaded himself inside a home on Leonard St. near Valley Avenue.

Multiple police forces were on the scene to assist the Grand Rapids Police Department, including the Michigan State Police, the Walker Police, the Kent County Sheriff's Department, and K9 units.

Throughout the evening, police tried to get the man to come outside. During the stand-off, shots were heard being fired and at times the man would appear on the roof of the home.

At about 10:30, area residents were warned to stay inside and lock their doors. Roads in the area were also closed down.

As late as 2:30, the police were still using a loudspeaker to talk to the subject in the home.

As the clock ticked past 3 am, officers finally fired tear gas into the home. About 15 minutes later they sent in a K-9 dog to locate the suspect.

In an attempt to subdue the man, the K-9 dog was stabbed several times and has life threatening injuries. The dog was taken for emergency vet treatment.

The 24-year-old suspect was finally taken into custody about 3:30 am on Monday morning. He suffered bites from the police dog. He was taken to the hospital to be checked and will then be transported to jail.

There has been no update as to which GRPD K-9 had been injured. No additional information has been released about the dog's condition or the extent of the injuries.
