Unpopular Opinion Calls Great Lakes Islands ‘Trashy’
Ask most vacationers and you would probably hear that a trip to an island in the Great Lakes would make for a special getaway. Whether its touristy, history or natural beauty the islands of the Great Lakes have all in abundance. But would you go so far as to call them 'trashy?
One person did - and here's their argument.
The topic came up on a Reddit subreddit dedicated to the Great Lakes. The poster says in particular Mackinac Island, Michigan in Lake Huron and Put-In-Bay, Ohio in Lake Erie are both trashy and 'mismanaged.'
Dont get me wrong, the islands can be beautiful, but there is very little natural beauty when most of it is bulldozed for dirty hotels and unmaintained vineyards. These islands are not towns, they are not nature preserves, they are little plots of land divided up by inbred hicks who live there because their daddy’s daddy’s daddy stole it from the Indians hundreds of years ago and now rule it like a petty feudal lord.
Maybe just some internet posturing.

The Great Lakes Most Commercialized Islands
Those two islands, Mackinac and Put-In-Bay, are the two most commercialized and kitschy islands in the Lakes. Mackinac with its fudge and Disney-esque car-free downtown and PIB having the 'Key West of the North' vibe.
Interestingly, there are adjacent and accessible islands to both Mackinac and PIB with very different feels.
Unspoiled, Natural Islands in the Great Lakes
Lake Huron's Bois Blanc Island is a short boat ride and completely different feel from Mackinac. Same with Middle Bass, Isle St George and Kelleys Island all off the Ohio coast from Sandusky and Cedar Point.
Lake Superior is home to many more natural and largely unspoiled islands. Most famously Isle Royale but also Grand Isle of Munising and the Apostles in Wisconsin.
