The Grand Rapids Police Department posted to Facebook Thursday afternoon, warning residents of a scam involving emails where the sender is demanding a payment to deactivate a bomb.

GRPD say they've been in touch with the FBI who have reason to believe the threats are a hoax originating from outside the country.

They advise you delete the email and do NOT send money.

WZZM-13 reports that schools and businesses in multiple cities across the country, including Chicago, New York City, and Denver have received threats.

Some of the emails began with the subject line "Think Twice", and many demanded $20,000 in Bitcoin.

The New York City Police Department has said they believe the threats were meant to cause disruption and are not credible.

Some schools were dismissed early and others were evacuated due to the threats in some parts of the country.

According to WZZM-13, there have been no reports of actual explosive devices being discovered.

Walker Police Police say they have received reports as well. They also advise you not send money or open any links.
