You must like the colder temperatures. After all, you do live in West Michigan. If you've been bracing for those sub-zero temps, you might have to keep waiting. So far, mid- Michigan has been pretty mild, comparatively. As it turns out, things are about to get even warmer in much of Michigan this December.

According to the National Weather Service, much of the US will experience warmer temperatures compared to normal next week. This includes the famously chilly mitten state. Normal average temps are around 25-30 degrees for this time of year, but by mid week, next week, we could hit 55 or even 60 degrees.

Why is it going to warm up?

This weekend another storm is expected to blow through the US followed by a big ridge that will form in the middle of the country. Because Grand Rapids is on the eastern side of this jet stream, the hot spot will stop right over the Midwest.

Is it a Heat Wave or a Blow Torch?

Meteorologists have had a little fun in the past few years calling these major winter warm-ups “blowtorches.” It’s because the weather maps look incredibly warm for December. The height of the warming trend will be next Wednesday or Thursday. We could warm to around 30 degrees above normal.

Not to worry...the heatwave, blowtorch, warm-up or whatever you want to call it, will be mostly over by December 22 making room for a colder Christmas. Will it be a white Christmas? It's too soon to tell.
