The old weather saying about March going out like lamb has been proven false during the early spring of 2025. Savage weather has struck the Great Lakes region like a snarling lion as March transitioned to April.

Much of the region saw vicious thunderstorms with straight line winds and tornados while a crippling Northern Michigan ice storm left the region under as much as an inch-and-a-half of ice that shut down power and made gasoline difficult to find.

April 2nd turned out to be another inhospitable weather day. Just off the southern shore of Lake Michigan in northwest Indiana, intense winds felled a line of semi trucks and trailers like dominos.

A line of semis heading north on Interstate 65 near the exit for State Road 2 near Lowell, that's in southern Lake County about 20 miles south of Gary and the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Indiana State Police report:

All of the drivers stated that extremely strong gust of wind blew their trucks over. There wasn’t any contact between any of the vehicles. No injuries reported.

Video from the accident scene can be seen here as well as more photos.

Drivers passing through the area as well as locals have shared:

Just drove through there going south. Group of 3 and a big van rolled over then a little farther south from these is another semi over blocking right lane. Crazy.

there was about a minute of extremely high winds in that area approximately 2 hours ago. It wasn't even raining, it was very odd. But I'd estimate the winds were in excess of 60 miles per hour. Then it suddenly stopped.

Yep…felt, heard, and saw that wind down here in Hebron. It came out of nowhere and sounded like a train. I’m so grateful all the drivers are okay

The interstate was closed south of the accident point with all traffic needing to exit at State Road 10.
