Today, Ilitch Companies announced that they are exploring launching their own regional sports network for the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Red Wings and additional sports and entertainment options.

The regional sports network would serve as the television, broadcast and distribution home for the Tigers and Red Wings.

The exploratory process has begun with no set deadline. Meanwhile, renewal and extension possibilities will be discussed with Fox Sports Detroit.

It's really not a surprise to see this announcement. The future will likely hold many similar networks for major sports teams.

You also have to wonder what, if anything, this could mean for a future Detroit-based Major League Soccer franchise. Rumors and pitches for a team in Detroit have been ongoing for years. Just one week ago, the idea of a retractable roof at Ford Field was shot down.

Could a new regional sports network lead to the Ilitch family becoming involved in MLS too?
