I’m in Training for My First .1K
I have never been a runner. Whenever I see someone running alongside the road, they never look happy. I've never seen a runner with a smile on their face. Despite all of that, I've decided to sign up for my first .1K race coming up this weekend.
It's time to get in shape, figure out what I'm going to wear, and get my running shoes broken in. Oh sure, there are experienced runners who run in marathons, but I've decided to start small -- very small. I'm beginning my journey into the running world by signing up for my first .1K race.
How far is a .1K race?
I've been as confused about metrics as the next guy. In grade school I remember them telling us that everything was soon going to be measured using the metric system. Unlike the rest of the world, here in the United States it has been a very slow transition. About the only thing we measure using the metric system is 2 liter bottles of soda!
I sat down and did the math...a .1K race is about 328 feet. Yes, that's right!! (I told you I was starting small!) The race is only about the length of a football field!
It's a small race for a big cause! This .1K road race starts at one end of Bridge Street and finishes about a block later. It's a “Race to End Duchenne!”. All proceeds from the GR.1K will be donated to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy in an effort to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
This is the 10th year for the race (yes, I've late to the party). The race will start at 12 Noon on Saturday, November 6th, and be over by about 12:05 pm!
After the race, the kitchens will be open for lunch, there will be drink specials at various Bridge Street establishments, and live music at The Knickerbocker and other venues. The GR .1K Closing Ceremony will be at 3 pm.
