You Would Never Believe the Indiana Toll Road Gets Within Inches of the Michigan State Line
Drivers who are passing across Indiana along that state's Toll Road (Interstates 80-90) may not give much thought to Michigan if that isn't their destination, however the state line is tantalizingly close several times as the freeway makes it way across the southern Great Lakes.

It's an oddity to consider another state's toll road could have crossed the state line or the planning behind it.
The Toll Road never strays more than 10 miles from the Michigan border. There are three notable 'near misses' with the state line.
The westernmost occurs west of South Bend and south of Galien in Berrien County. Here the Toll Road gets within a quarter mile of Michigan.
Just south of Sturgis, the Toll Road gets within 4/10 of a mile to Michigan. Interestingly, the signage as the exit gives little notice of M-66 or of the larger community of Sturgis as the exit is marked for the Indiana communities of Howe and Lagrange.
The winner for the closest to Michigan spot on the Indiana Toll Road is a spot north of the crossroads of Greenfield Mills where the expressway is roughly 1/10 of a mile from Michigan - roughly 2 football fields of distance separate the Indiana highway from the Michigan line.
Travelling south out of Branch County after a jog where Bawden Road becomes 100E in Lagrange County you will pass over the Toll Road basically at the state line.

Michigan drivers might be getting a feeling of, 'Welcome to Indiana, now Pay Up' knowing the Toll Road is so close to the state line.
It may come as a surprise to Michiganders who don't live near the Indiana line to know that many do have toll transponders (EZ-Pass) in their vehicles and use the Toll Road for regular commuting.
