A trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a dream for many. But only a few of the visitors to the UP take the even more difficult journey to Isle Royale, Michigan's island National Park in remote Lake Superior, the least visited park in the continental United States.

Because Isle Royale is so sparsely visited questions often arise about what it's really like to spend time on the island. That exact question came up recently on the Michigan subreddit of Reddit.

The first question that comes up is exactly how to get to Isle Royale. Either from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula or Minnesota the choices are a seaplane or ferry. The flights run just shy of $400 per person for a round trip flight. The round trip ferry trip is a little under $200 per person.

Took my time doing the Feldtman loop, swam in lake superior, ate thimble berries, saw moose. It was a great time.

I did, it is honestly the best place in Michigan I’ve been. I did 4 nights. Just kinda meandered around the island. Got the camp site in the afternoon. Then just strolled around looking at all the cool plants and animals. So my advice is don’t rush it, go slow, enjoy the island.

What Is the Reality of Spending Time on Isle Royale

Other commenters shared some of the realties of this remote island with very few services.

I found it to be extremely serene and rugged. My deepest and longest lasting impression of it was that it is SO quiet there.

I camped there for five days and essentially went from one end of the island to the other. I'd recommend for anyone who is comfortable and knows what they are doing backpacking.

I would strongly recommend that you plan out what hikes/trails you want to do beforehand, especially if you’re backpacking. That way you can plan out getting to the campsites at decent times (the shelters are first come, first serve).

For those who desire to visit the park, it's certainly a aspiration worth pursuing.

The Only Destination For These Highways are Michigan State Parks

There are several highways in Michigan's road network that exist only to connect to state parks.
