Northern Michigan and the Michigan lake shore are getting recognized more and more as excellent wine regions.
Areas around the Great Lakes, carved out by glaciers, have rich, fertile soil and conditions good for farming, making them ideal for the wine industry.
Two resorts in Northern Michigan have been ranked in the top 5 "Best Wine Country Hotels in America" in a new USA Today 10best poll.
A panel of experts nominated twenty U.S. hotels that "provide a perfect place to relax over a glass of wine after a day of touring and tasting in wine regions around the country." Then it was put up to a public vote to determine the top ten.

I've visited both of these wineries, and I have to say, the honors are well deserved.
Chateau Chantal in Traverse City nabbed the No. 1 spot! The Inn at Blackstar Farms in Suttons Bay came in at No. 3.
Number 1 Wine Country Hotel in U.S. - Chateau Chantal - Traverse City, Michigan
Chateau Chantal is located just north of Traverse City. You absolutely cannot beat view! The 65-acre vineyard, winery, and bed and breakfast sit a top a ridge near the northern end of the Peninsula, giving you the most beautiful views of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bays. I could sit on Chateau Chantal's patio for HOURS.
While I have not stayed in the hotel yet, I definitely hope to someday! All suites and rooms have those stunning views too, many with private patios or balconies, wet bars, and whirlpool tubs. The inn’s amenities include fireplaces and sitting areas, plus an exceptional breakfast.
No. 3 Wine Country Hotel in U.S. - Inn at Blackstar Farms - Suttons Bay, Michigan
On my bucket list for years, I recently visited Black Star Farms for the first time and was NOT disappointed. The sprawling farm on Suttons Bay has actual stables with horses and other farm animals. Their tasting rooms offer wine flights, spirit flights, wine by the glass, featured cocktails, and more.
The patio is wonderful and it's just as beautiful inside. For dining, just a short walk away is Bistro Polaris. If you book a room at the inn, your stay includes daily breakfast, nightly hospitality hour with wine and small bites, a bottle of house wine, and an exclusive barrel room tasting.
Black Star Farms also nabbed the No. 6 spot for "Best Winery Restaurant".
