Black Friday May Be A White Friday In West Michigan

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year but Mother Nature sometimes throws shoppers a curve ball. This Friday may be a White Friday thanks to the weather.

The first "Black Friday" occurred the day after Thanksgiving in the 1950s.  It was when Police in Philadephia complained about a large number of people coming to the city to shop and they had to do crowd control and gave it the name Black Friday.

Black Friday wasn't solidified as the unofficial start of Christmas shopping until the 1980s. Since then Black Friday has been synonymous with shoppers and stores as the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States.

People have been known to line up in front of stores on Thanksgiving waiting for the doors to be open on Black Friday so they can be the first to get the deals. With shoppers trying to get the deals first many stores hire extra security to help control crowds. Sometimes the shoppers do get out of hand and sometimes fights break out. Even with all the chaos many families have Black Friday traditions all over Michigan.

Black Friday, May Be a White Friday For Some Shoppers in West Michigan

Mother Nature may throw shoppers in West Michigan a weather curveball that could make driving conditions more difficult with multiple days of lake-effect snow.

According to WZZM, lake-effect snow will begin on Thanksgiving night and continue through Sunday with the storm's primary impact landing on Black Friday. Snowfall totals have not been announced yet but Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, and Kalamazoo Counties will see the most impact from the lake-effect snow.
