Michigan Merch is the New European Fashion Craze
Due to being a gamer and joining various online communities, I have quite a few friends around the world who I talk to every day. Friends in different states, around Europe, the farthest being out in Egypt. We're an odd group, but a good one.
I recently browsed Reddit and came across a post on r/Michigan about someone discussing how they'd noticed in back-to-back YouTube videos, that Europeans were casually wearing Michigan-related shirts and was wondering if this was a trend overseas.
“Michigan” shirts a fashion trend in Europe?!

Michigan Merch Is The Next Big Thing
According to the replies on the post, Michiganders traveling abroad or who now live abroad have come across Michigan merch in the most obscure places.
- One user reported that they were posting on Reddit while wearing a Detroit shirt...they bought in Sydney, Australia. Which is not where Detroit is located nor is it anywhere near it. Nor is it in Europe, but it's still a curious find.
- Another user reported they bought a Michigan sweatshirt at an Aldi...in Germany.
First Hand Accounts
I decided to approach two of my friends in England, Josh and Lauren, to see if these claims were accurate and got a pretty resounding YES.
Lauren said that it is "pretty common" to see apparel with States, but it is "way more common to see your schools, like Harvard and MIT". Meanwhile, Josh owns multiple shirts and ballcaps for America-related things "because it's American". Mind you, neither of them has ever visited any of the places on their clothes.
So yeah, it would seem if you were to list University apparel or your random Michigan merch you were gifted at Christmas that you don't ever wear on a site like Depop, you could turn a pretty penny.
