Michigan’s First Maverik Gas Station Is Here — And It’s Actually Pretty Cool
I'm an unabashed Kum and Go fan. Their fresh food is surprisingly good for a gas station, it is one of the few rewards programs I actually utilize, and the name is iconic. So imagine my confusion when, as multiple locations were being built, it was announced the Kum and Go brand had been purchased and would be retiring the name.

Maverik, the country's largest independent fuel marketer, will soon change all Kum and Go locations to Maverik locations. I was worried the gas station I'd become overly attached to would be gone too soon. However, now that the first new Maverik store has opened in Michigan, I can say with confidence: they're pretty cool.
What Is Maverik?
Maverik is a gas station chain that started in Wyoming and has since spread into 13 states. The company has a focus on the outdoors, with its gas stations serving as a "stop on your next adventure." This love for nature is evident in the interior decor, which is where Maverik really differs from Kum and Go. The first Maverik is located where the old Arnie's used to be at 777 54th St SW, Wyoming, MI 49509.

Maverik's Attention to Detail
On the surface, it's pretty easy to understand why Maverik chose to purchase Kum and Go. Both gas stations do more than just sell gas and snacks, with both offering a fully functioning kitchen with warm food and unique menus. Maverik's kitchen, dubbed the BonFire (very outdoorsy), sells very similar warm food to Kum and Go, so it isn't a major overhaul there.
Where this gas station really shines is its attention to detail. The walls are completely covered with many of Michigan's most iconic natural beauties like Munising Falls, the Grand Haven Pier, Fallasburg Bridge, and more.

There are even "trees" inside to really sell an outdoor experience. This interior is completely catered to Michigan and is refreshing in a world of copy-and-paste chain gas stations.
I'm a sucker for Kum and Go burritos, so I got a Chorcheezo Burrito to see how it compared. I'm happy to say the quality is just as good. There's also a good variety of cold food, pictured above.
Two Things To Know
The one vital change that will affect everyone is that your previously used Kum and Go Rewards points will not carry over to Maverik, despite being owned by the same company. Maverik has its own rewards program and its own app, so you'll want to spend all those points before your Kum and Go is remodeled.
After speaking to one of the workers, Maverik is aiming to have all 7 Kum and Go's in Michigan converted to Maverik locations by the beginning of 2026, but a Maverik spokesperson has said an exact timeline has yet to be announced. Either way, it's not often you the Rainforest Cafe of gas stations opens on your street, so this is worth a visit.
