Michigan is covered in public land, and wild fruit grows at some of these locations. You can pick berries, nuts, and fruit on Michigan public lands, just follow these rules.

Foraging For Wild Foods

I’ve hunted public land throughout Michigan. At several locations I have hunted, I have found apples, blackberries, raspberries, mulberries, morel mushrooms, walnuts, and more.

It is legal in Michigan to pick tree fruits, berries, and nuts on public land for personal use, as long as you don't damage the plants. You cannot harvest whole plants or anything that would damage or destroy the plant.

You can't harvest ramps (wild onions), fiddleheads, or maple sap from public lands.

A recent Reddit post from Grand Rapids users asked for help locating wild fruit in the area that is free to pick. Below are some comments for ideas on where to forage for fruit in the area.

Right out of the gate, a poster offered up a location for some mulberry trees.

If you plan to pick from trees on private property, be sure to get the landowner’s permission.

After combing through the Reddit thread, most suggestions were about fruit trees located in people's yards or private property. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has a whole page dedicated to foraging for wild foods that has all the dos and don'ts.
