It's almost become comedic at this point to try and keep track of all the trails around Michigan. My friends and I try to make a conscious effort to visit different trails around the state, and while it's nice to have a healthy exposure of what Michigan has to offer, it's created an unfortunate problem:

We all have different favorite trails, which can make choosing where to go a mini-battle each time. Thankfully, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Pure Michigan have started an official list of the best trails and trail towns to visit in the entire state, deciding for you.

Pure Michigan Trails

Pure Michigan, the advertising campaign that promotes tourism around Michigan, highlights many great things to do around the Mitten State. Embracing the outdoors is one of the most popular activities, so Pure Michigan and the DNR have teamed up to highlight many of the best "trail towns" and trails around the State.

"Trail Towns" are towns or cities around the state that have been recognized for its multitude of trails to explore. "Pure Michigan Trails" are large trails around the state that are specifically highlighted for their excellence, providing a breakdown of what makes them great and providing links to learn more from there.

2024's "Pure Michigan Trail" is the Highbanks Trail in Iosco County, and 2024's "Pure Michigan Trail Towns" include the City of Lansing, the Oscoda Area, and the Village of Milford.  You can view the full list here.
