Only ONE Michigan Pizza Joint Made Yelp’s Top 100 of 2024

With Michigan's rich pizza history and all the great restaurants serving up delicious slices, just one joint made the cut for Yelp's Top 100 Pizza Spots of 2024.

Apparently the list was decided by "Yelp Elites".

According to Yelp, these are reviewers "who are active in the Yelp community and role models on and off the Yelp site."

I mentioned Michigan's connection and history with pizza, with national chains Little Caesars, Domino's, Hungry Howie's, Buddy's, and Jet's Pizza all getting their start here. That and being the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza are key reasons a recent study from the McNair Center for Free Enterprise at Northwood University dubbed Michigan "The Unlikely Pizza Capital of the United States."

The Yelp list of 100 best pizza restaurants dove into trends as well. Interestingly, they found that Detroit-style was one of the top pizza trends of 2024, with Yelp searches going up 26 percent - and yet just one Michigan pizza spot is on the list...

The Michigan pizza joint to make Yelp's 100 Best Pizza Joints of 2024 is Silver Beach Pizza in St. Joseph.

It comes in at No. 99.

Silver Beach Pizza opened inside an the Amtrak railroad depot at 410 Vine St. in 2005.

It's still an active train station, with two trains passing by each day!

In terms of the style of pizza you'll find at Silver Beach Pizza, co-owner Jay Costas recently shared with PMO Pizza,

We actually learned pizza from Tom Gelsosomo, who owns Gelsosomo’s Pizza in Indiana and Illinois. He was a huge help when we were getting started. We’ve got our style, and, honestly, we’re barely keeping up with it as is, so we don’t plan to expand into other styles.

Gelsosomo's is considered Chicago-style pizza.

Silver Beach Pizza makes its dough fresh daily, from scratch. On the menu you'll find more than 15 specialty pizzas, plus the option to build your own, with more than 35 toppings to choose from.

The restaurant has creative pizza specials too like Chicken Parmesan, Gyro Pizza, Nashville Hot Chicken, Cheeseburger, Elote Pizza and more. This past fall we told you about Silver Beach's Green Bean Casserole and Thanksgiving Pizza, pictured below:

The menu also includes calzones, sandwiches, salads, and appetizers like nachos, wings, and fried pickles.
