When is the Annual Tree Lighting Downtown Grand Rapids?
Each year, a huge, 40+ foot tall Christmas tree goes up near Rosa Parks Circle downtown Grand Rapids.
The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting downtown Grand Rapids in 2023 is Friday, Dec. 1, 5p.m. to 7p.m.
The all-ages event takes place along Monroe Center St. NW, between Monroe Ave. NW and Ottawa Ave. NW, near the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
What to Expect at Grand Rapids' Christmas Tree Lighting 2023
It's more than holiday lights!
This year’s event includes free popcorn, hot chocolate, coffee, donuts, s'mores, and tons more!
Enjoy entertainment from:
- Girls Choral Academy
- Western Michigan University Ice Skating Team
- Golden Tiger Kung Fu
- The Salvation Army Brass Band
Festival of the Arts, Grand Rapids Public Library, Read GR, The Grand Rapids Children's Museum, The Home Depot Kids Workshop, and USPS will be hosting different family activities, arts and crafts, and giveaways during the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting.
You'll also be able to meet and take pictures with the Nutcracker characters from the Grand Rapids Ballet and Whoville characters. Plus, the Humane Society of West Michigan will have Max the Grinch's Dog (available for adoption) as well as other puppies. Matrix will have a photo booth for Santa and the giant snow globe for the Whoville characters.
Food trucks Dine Out Dawgs and Patty Matters will be on-site.

- Asian Pacific - Filipino Asian Festival will have treats & Lunar New Year coloring sheets and 2024 info handouts
- Country Fresh will bring festive ice cream flavors
- Gerald R. Ford International Airport will have a table and handing out swag bags including a reusable bag, light up necklaces, airplane toys, and candy
Also, The Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) will be at the Grand Rapids Fire Department booth accepting donations of:
- Socks
- Handwarmers
- Hats
- Gloves
