
New Sushi and Pho Restaurant Opening Up Downtown Grand Rapids
More exciting news for sushi lovers in Grand Rapids! Another new restaurant serving up sushi rolls of all kinds, pho, rice dishes and more is set to open soon.

Recently we told you that Kawa Sushi Grand Rapids had opened up on Bridge St. It's a new eatery from the same folks who own Kawa Sushi in Rockford and Kawa Express in Wyoming.

Here's another new sushi joint to check out: Vel Sushi and Pho at Studio Park downtown Grand Rapids. Located at 122 Oakes St. SW Suite 110, the restaurant serves a huge variety of sushi rolls. Choose from spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, California, sweet potato, eel, Yellowtail, spicy crab, cucumber, steamed asparagus, and more.

There's appetizers like edamame, miso soup, crab wonton, spring rolls, dumplings, and squid salad. The menu also includes poke bowls, pho, and fried rice dishes as well. For drinks, sip on a variety of fruit and milk teas, Vietnamese coffee, juice, or pop.

Vel Sushi and Pho's soft opening is Monday, May 5, 2025. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 11a.m. to 8p.m., Friday and Saturday 11a.m. to 9p.m. and Sunday 4p.m. to 9p.m.
According to Crain's Grand Rapids, the new restaurant is owned by husband and wife team Anu Sung and Acea Thawng. It's name for their son, Vel. Previously the pair were franchisees of Hissho Sushi and they later opened a restaurant in Indiana called Roku Sushi and Pho.
