Yes, You Can Get a Burger for Breakfast in Grand Rapids
They (who are "they"? I'm not sure.) say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And, in my own personal opinion, breakfast food is some of the best food out there.
But what if you're hungry for something different in the early hours of the day? People have different schedules, and there are those out there who would love to get a great burger at 8 a.m. Thankfully, Grand Rapids offers at least a dozen different spots where you can grab a burger while most people are eating their bran flakes.

I started looking into this when I saw that someone had asked where they could find an early-morning burger in the Lansing subreddit. Folks were quick to jump in and offer up a ton of suggestions.
But when I tried to find a list of Grand Rapids spots, there was nothing to be found. So, I decided to put the list together myself.
Where to Get a Burger for Breakfast in Grand Rapids
I was surprised to find so many spots in Grand Rapids. Perhaps it's due to the plethora of third-shift workers in the city, or maybe it's because these restaurant owners know that people like variety in the morning.

First, let's get a couple of chains out of the way.
IHOP & Denny's Locations
Both IHOP and Denny's have burgers on their menus. The two IHOP locations in Grand Rapids (one on the East Beltline, one on 28th St. are open 24 hours and offer their full menus all day.) All three Denny's locations in the area (Grand Rapids - Plainfield, Kentwood - 28th St., and Wyoming - 44th St.) are also open 24 hours and have their full menus available.
New Beginnings
New Beginnings is also a chain, but it's a local one and worth highlighting on this list. Known for its breakfast, New Beginnings also offers up standard lunch fare like sandwiches, salads, and burgers.
New Beginnings has nine locations across the Grand Rapids area to choose from.
Mr. Burger
Another beloved local chain, Mr. Burger, is also deserving of being on this list. As the name may suggest, Mr. Burger is known for its burgers, but is also open early in the morning and has a ton of breakfast options, as well. The good news is that all of their menu items are available all day. Which means that, yes, you can get yourself an olive burger as early as 6 a.m. most days.
Mr. Burger has eight locations across the Grand Rapids area.
Matchbox Diner & Drinks
Matchbox Diner & Drinks, located on Lake Drive in Eastown, is famous for its brunch and dinner. I took a look at their brunch/lunch menu and noticed that they offer up three different burgers (the diner burger, the Matchbox burger, and an olive burger), but I wasn't entirely sure if you could get a burger early in the morning.
So I gave them a call, and the extremely helpful person on the other end of the phone told me that yes, you can get a burger for breakfast at Matchbox. In fact, their entire breakfast/brunch menu is available each day until 5 p.m.
Bob's Bar
A staple on Michigan St., Bob's Sports Bar has long been a favorite of third shifters who work at the nearby hospitals. Bob's offers up a pretty big menu as far as sports bars go, and the menu is available all day, every day. There are only two burgers listed on the menu (Bob's Burger and the Whiskey Burger), but you can also build your burger however you'd like.
Tuesdays, Bob's offers up a special where you can get a burger, fries, and a pint of beer for just $9.
Grand Coney
Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Bob's down Michigan St., you'll find the Grand Coney. The Grand Coney is one of the very few establishments in the area that's still open 24/7. And, they offer up their full menu all day long.
Grand Coney offers up all of your favorite breakfast fare, plus a ton of great burgers you can choose from. (Get it with the onion rings and a shake - trust me.)
Logan's Alley
A little further east on Michigan St., you'll find Logan's Alley. This neighborhood staple offers up fantastic food and does offer breakfast items. But you can also snag one of their three different burger options (classic burger, olive burger, and jalapeno popper burger).
(Side note - if you're not a big eater, my favorite thing to order on the menu is what they call "My Boyfriend Doesn't Share", which is one chicken tender with a handful of French fries.)
Peppermill Cafe
The Peppermill Cafe in Standale is a super popular breakfast spot and has been for years. But did you know that if you aren't in the mood for eggs and bacon or biscuits and gravy, you can get a burger to start out your day?
The Peppermill has eight different burger options for you to choose from, including a build-your-own option.
Sundance Grill
Sundance Grill is mostly known for breakfast food, but they have a full menu that's available all day at both of their locations (Downtown Grand Rapids and Cascade).
Sundance offers up two different burger options - the bacon cheeseburger (pretty self-explanatory), and the Sunrise Burger (with bacon, bleu cheese, avocado, a fried egg,
grilled onions, and mayo).
Leo's Coney Island & Leo's Coney Island on Tap
If you've ever been into a traditional coney restaurant in Michigan, you know one thing for certain - their menus are extensive. And the two Leo's locations in Grand Rapids are no different. (Leo's Coney Island is out on 28th St., while you'll find Leo's on Tap right by Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids.)
