August 23 & 24 Are Clean Air Action Days in West Michigan
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has declared a Clean Air Action Day for elevated levels of ozone for Wednesday, August 23, and Thursday, August 24, 2023.
What Is a Clean Air Action Day?
A Clean Air Action Day means that ozone levels within several West Michigan counties are expected to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range according to the National Weather Service.
Which West Michigan Counties Have a Clean Air Action Day?
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy have issued the advisory for the following counties:
- Allegan
- Berrien
- Cass
- Kent
- Muskegon
- Ottawa
- Van Buren
What Precautions Should Be Taken on Clean Air Action Days?
Individuals and businesses in the above-listed counties are encouraged to avoid activities that can lead to ozone formation during Clean Air Action Days. Those activities include refueling vehicles and using gas-powered lawn equipment and charcoal lighter fluid.
Folks are encouraged to carpool, walk, ride a bike, delay or combine errands, and use water-based paints. The MAX in Holland offers free rides on their fixed routes to aid with transportation needs.
It's also recommended that active children and adults (as well as people with respiratory diseases like asthma) limit their outdoor exertion.
If you need to mow your lawn, it is recommended that you wait until after 6 p.m. to do so.
