Grand Rapids Police Hunt For Driver In Fatal Crosswalk Hit-and-Run
On Sunday morning, a tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a man in Grand Rapids who was trying to cross the street using the cross street.
The hit-and-run happened around 3:15 a.m. on Division Avenue near Kirtland Street.
Surveillance footage from Ara Salon captured the moments leading up to the tragic hit-and-run.
The video shows the victim walking onto Division Ave at a marked crosswalk after a red car passes.
As he crosses, veering slightly north of the crosswalk, he turns around, seemingly noticing oncoming headlights.
In an attempt to return across the street, he is struck by a vehicle that fails to stop, leaving him lying in the road.
Witnesses reported that officers performed CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jenete Hernandez, an employee at Ara Salon, suggested that a stop sign at the location could enhance pedestrian safety.
She recalled that a stop sign used to be there but was frequently run over and eventually removed.
The Grand Rapids Police Department is seeking information regarding the hit-and-run and encourages anyone with details to contact them at 616.456.3400 or Silent Observer.
