Stay Safe This Halloween With These Tips From GRPD
There are a lot of things that can be scary when it comes to the spookiest day of the year. But, one of the things that shouldn't be scary this Halloween is taking the kiddos in your life trick or treating.
No need to fret or be frightening thanks to a safety guide from the Grand Rapids Police Department, you can make sure the only scares you receive are from the best decorated yards in West Michigan.
Here are some tips from GRPD to keep you safe while you and your family fill your buckets and bags with Candy this Halloween.
- Don't be out too late or too early, Trick-or-treating hours should take place from 6–8 p.m. on October 31st
- If you plan to hand out candy, let everyone know by turning on your front porch lights at sunset.
- If you're out there grabbing candy, make sure to only stop at houses with porch lights switched on. (This will also save you time and disappointment)
- Speaking of lights, carry and use a flashlight when it gets dark out to help see, and help others see you
- Children should make sure they go trick-or-treating with adults, there are some creepy people out there and this will keep you safe. Traveling in groups is also recommended.
- Make sure you wear clothing that is visible to drivers, and make sure your mask doesn't obstruct your view.
- Avoid crossing the street as much as possible; follow a route that requires minimal street crossing. And when you can, use crosswalks when crossing the street.
- Stay on sidewalks whenever possible; otherwise, keep to the left side of the road where incoming traffic is visible.
- No matter what, never walk into a strangers’ home or vehicle.
- Not that it's common to find anything, you should still have all candy inspected by an adult before you chow down.
- And if you plan to be out and driving around during trick or treating hours, be extra careful and watch out for those out trick-or-treating while driving through residential areas.
If you follow these safe and obvious tips, you should ensure that your halloween is full of fun and candy. Happy Halloween, be safe out there!
