Kalamazoo Baseball Fans Are Torn Between Fear and Curiosity Over the Skat Dog
As a baseball fan who lives for the game (and the ballpark food that comes along with it) I recently had the chance to preview some of the wild and wonderful potential menu items for the West Michigan Whitecaps. From over-the-top burgers to creative twists on classic stadium fare, I thought I had seen it all.
Then, the Kalamazoo Growlers threw me a curveball with the latest addition to their menu for the 2025 season.
Speaking of, check out what could be on the WM Whitecaps menu below ⬇️
Introducing the Skat Dog: the latest creation to hit Homer Stryker Field concession stands this season. It’s a hot dog, sure but instead of a traditional bun you'll find it’s nestled inside a chocolate cake doughnut then topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry. It’s part dessert, part ballpark classic, and entirely one of the most unhinged things I’ve ever seen. And to be honest, in all of my horror: I can't wait to try it anyway.
But we obviously have to address the elephant in the room which is it's name. “Skat” refers to animal droppings, which doesn’t exactly scream “delicious.” But Growlers owner Brian Colopy swears it’s worth every one of the 1,017 calories that come along with downing one.
And if it's anything like their past culinary experiments (like the viral Twinkie Dog or the double bacon cheeseburger sandwiched between two bear claw doughnut ) it just might be the next must-try oddity in Michigan's baseball food scene.
The Skat Dog will be available only at the Growlers’ home opener on May 28 and during Saturday home games throughout the season, so make sure you attend one of those games if you want to get your paws on it. It will run you $10 to try, but if that's too much of a splurge, 10 lucky fans will get one for free at every Saturday game this season.
Will I try it? As someone who believes baseball is best enjoyed with a side of culinary adventure… yeah, probably. I just might need a seventh-inning stretch and a big long outfield nap after.
